Transas surveys Malta shipping
The contract for Phase 2 of the Malta Vessel Traffic Management and Information System (VTMIS) project, co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund, has been signed with Transas. It is an advance towards implementation of the Trans-European transport network infrastructure, which is one of the Communitys objectives for developing competitiveness and growth in Europe, and will provide a 24/7service.
Once deployed, the system will automatically confirm the container load/discharge movements on each of the 14 ship-to-shore cranes in operation.
The system will help Malta meet its principal responsibilities to regulate and control navigation, provide a tool to enhance the management of shipping and safety of navigation for port users. The system has also been designed to support Search and Rescue (SAR) operations and border monitoring/control. Other system requirements are to support the assessment of risks, improve the decision-making process regarding safety of navigation, the protection of the marine environment, and port/border security.
