CMP has seen volumes balloon on the back of Russia’s appetite for cars. In 2007, the port processed more than 500,000 cars – a strategic target the port did not expect to meet until 2010.

“Space to unload, park and load is the critical point,” said Mr Karlsson. “Our capacity is reaching its limit, but we’ll do everything we can to meet the demand for new or more space. If capacity increases, then growth in volume will continue too.”

This year, a land-filled harbour basin will come into use as a loading and unloading area and there are plans to move the container terminal in Malmö to the North Harbour in order to provide more space for car activities in the Freeport.

CMP has also said it is also prepared to build indoor car parks if customers demand them.
