Crane collision causes injuries at BCT

In a disclosure, ICTSI revealed that the ferry vessel Stena Spirit collided with the Baltic Container Terminal Ltd’s (BCT) quay crane number 5, causing the crane’s collapse and resulting in three engineers being injured.

At the time of writing, two of the engineers have been released from hospital but one is still undergoing treatment after surgery for a spine injury.

The incident also damaged an adjacent quay crane, portions of the quay and a number of empty containers.

Luckily, the ferry escaped any damage and all of its 120 passengers were unharmed.

ICTSI reports that despite the incident, the interruption to terminal operations was kept to a minimum.

In a statement, ICTSI said: “The majority of the terminal, including berthing areas, remains fully operational, with four quay cranes and a mobile harbour crane that are fully functional.”

It is understood that ICTSI will introduce heavy duty mobile cranes as an interim solution.

The accident comes just a week after BCT announced it was entering into a credit agreement to fund the modernisation of the Gdynia terminal – luckily, there will be investment in new equipment – including quay cranes.
