El Prat collapse costs PA a bundle
Barcelona Port Authority has calculated that it has lost € 37.8m ($50.9m) following the collapse of part of the quayside at the new El Prat quay. This will delay transfer of the planned container terminal to operator Tercat until 2010.
According to Tercat, its own business development plan has been knocked back by at least six months. It also plans to suspend investment of €620m ($834.6m) until the entire situation in respect of the new area is clarified.
Initial investigations suggest that the foundations of the quay remain intact and that the collapse was due to the type of infill material used.
