Lisbon fears losses from strikes
A strike called by dockworkers at the Port of Lisbon on June 25, is to be extended by a further month. As of July 22, the port will be paralysed for one hour every day – between 15.00 and 16.00 – until August 19 as stevedores down tools in support of jobs.
The Association of the Port of Lisbon Operators (AOPL), along with two other groups linked to activities at the port (the A-ETPL and AOP) have expressed their dissatisfaction and indignation in respect of the new strikes called by the stevedores union.
They jointly emphasises that the main consequence of the strike would be to do damage to the image of the port, which would lack credibility and therefore result in additional cost for operators.
Joana Nunes Coelho, the president of AOPL, stressed that vessels have been forced to leave the port without being charged, while a further seven have also left because of a lack of stevedores to handle them.
A further two lines, she warned, are considering quitting the port all together. She has appealed to the common sense of the union’s leadership, asking them to rethink what they are doing and to be aware that they “may be jeopardising jobs they claim to defend”.
