Liverpool power outage causes delays

A power outage at Liverpool Port which caused delays and congestion for hauliers at Liverpool2 has seen a backlog of containers and gate times extended to 24 hours.

The outage on Tuesday 31 July, which affected the IT systems operating the port’s container terminals and saw operations suspended at the GB£400m deepwater Liverpool2 terminal, has now been fixed and operations resumed.

Peel Ports said it acknowledged the delays in turnaround times, stating that the “outage was fixed on the same day and operations resumed.”

It added: “The team is working tirelessly to fully clear the backlog of containers and return both terminals to normal safe operations as quickly as possible.”

In addition to 24-hour gates Peel Ports has increased its customer service support, increased the number of Marshalls available to assist with haulage direction and support and added more ‘comfort measures’ at terminal 2, including more toilets and catering facilities.

Delays at Liverpool2, launched in 2016, saw hauliers having to wait for hours as the terminal struggled to cope with container volumes, reported the Liverpool Echo.

The outage follows last month’s introduction of larger carriers at Liverpool2. A new transatlantic container service from 2M (Maersk and MSC alliance) will call at the terminal temporarily, while Maersk Line’s South American service, Colombia Express will also begin to call at the port.
