Man struck by Dublin container dies
Marine Terminals Limited (MTL) has confirmed a fatality at its Peel Ports Dublin South Bank Quay Container Terminal facility following an incident in which a landside container struck a man undertaking lashing work on a ship.
Dennis Gomez Regana from the Philippines died after the container struck him while he was onboard the MV Francop, while container lifting operations were underway dockside.
“Marine Terminals Limited (MTL) can confirm that a man was involved in a fatal incident on Wednesday 14th November while working at our terminal facility on South Bank Quay, Ringsend in Dublin,” said MTL in a statement.
“We are all saddened at the loss and our thoughts are especially with his family at this very difficult time.”
MTL confirmed it is currently assisting the Gardai, Health & Safety Authority and Marine Casualty Investigation Board with their investigations.
ITF maritime coordinator Jacqueline Smith said Mr Regana should not have been doing “the difficult and dangerous work of lashing and securing containers.”
She added: “The work should be left to dockers who have the training and experience to do it more safely.”
