PD Ports eyes bulk trade
PD Ports is looking to extend its footprint in the bulk market “quite significantly” in the future, Frans Calje, chief executive of PD Ports, told Port Strategy.
Mr Calje added that he sees huge opportunities on the bulk side of the business, particularly in terms of Finnish steel and agribulks.
More importantly, he added, is the development near Whitby of Sirius Minerals, a £3.2bn polyhalite mine underneath the Yorkshire Moors and the adjacent offshore area underneath the North Sea.
“That’s going to be an enormous catalyst for economic activity within the north of the UK,” he said. “Around 10 to 15 million tonnes of polyhalite is going to be produced, processed, regulated and treated at Teeside, to be exported through Teesport.”
Mr Calje revealed that Sirius Minerals have so far managed to raise the first billion of the investment, and has started to enable road access. Sirius Minerals is planning to further sink the mine shaft in the early part of next year.
