Portuguese terminal tender launches

PSA Sines, a concessionaire for the container terminal of the Port of Sines (Terminal XXI), launched the tender for the expansion of the terminal infrastructure.

The expansion phase includes the construction of another 204m of docks in order to provide the terminal with a 1,150m long pier by the end of 2021, representing an investment of €16.5m.

Megaship capacity

This is the first expansion phase after the renegotiation process for the Terminal XXI concession, which, in its final configuration, will feature a 1,750m pier to be built in a phased manner.

The investment reinforces the terminal’s capacity to receive several megaships simultaneously.

In October 2019, the Administration of the Ports of Sines and the Algarve (APS) and PSA Sines signed an amendment to the concession contract that allows new investments to be made regarding the expansion of the pier and the resizing and modernisation of the terminal, to enable an increase in the annual handling capacity from 2.3 to 4.1m TEU.

East pier expansion

In February of this year, APS awarded the contract for the third phase of expansion of the East Pier of the Port of Sines to Conduril – Engenharia S.A. The contract, worth around €72m, includes the extension of the pier by 750m, which reinforce the protection of the east side of the Port of Sines, where Terminal XXI is located.

This work is part of a project approved by the Competitiveness and Internationalization Operational Programme (COMPETE 2020) and will benefit from community financing, through the EU Cohesion Fund, of approximately €25m.
