Responsibility links with opportunity for CSOs
There is no doubt that port security is a growing concern. However, findings by the recent SSR Personnel corporate salary survey, although not specific to the marine industry, show that at the Chief Security Officers (CSO) level there is still a broad anomaly in responsibility from one organisation to another.
Many CSOs have responsibilities that cover international issues, and with merger and acquisitions activity in Europe a continued feature of corporate life, it seems that even secluded CSOs may now be exposed to language and technical challenges, regardless of where they are geographically.
However, although it may lead to a certain amount of job insecurity, it seems that it will increase opportunities for others who are willing to make the necessary changes, especially for those who appreciate that the security function adds value.
