Russia goes deeper
A new deep water port is to be built at Karelian Belomorsk in Russia, 376 kilometres from Petrozavodsk.
It will be capable of handling 9m tonnes of cargo annually, although this will be extended to 15m tonnes depending on demand.
Coal is expected to be the main traffic at the new port, which will cost $405m to build and allow the accommodation of vessels of up to 30,000 dwt. Construction is slated to begin in 2009 and operations in 2011.
