Sjursøya Phase Two delayed till 2014

The new 450,000 teu capacity terminal was due to open next year but work on the half-built terminal has ground to halt as consequence of the worsening global financial crisis, according to Port of Oslo’s head of terminal department Dag Sem.

A 143,000 teu terminal under phase one of a vast development project opened in January 2008 and is operated by Finnsteve/Norsteve. However, both phases of the development are on the peripheries of a much greater restructuring programme that will bring changes both to the city of Oslo and the port complex itself.

It is anticipated that large sections of the old port near the city centre will be released for urban development. Income from the sales will be used to modernise and concentrate the port activity in a smaller area south in the port. A new opera house has already been constructed.

The Oslo port and urban project, much of which still at the planning stage, is due for completion in 2025.
