Ust Luga to gain from the big freeze

Russian cargo has always suffered from the freezing winters, which often cause ports such as St Petersburg to close for a number of weeks. However the new gateway is less likely feel the strain due to its location as it is closer to the open sea.

One line, Unifeeder, has just flagged up its offer of a fixed weekly feeder and shortsea calls and says it will be ready from day one with a complete “one-stop shop” of services from offices at the port.

The new terminal is aiming to offer a competitive alternative as the necessary infrastructure is already in place and it is connected by road and rail links to the major traffic arteries. While the multipurpose port is still under construction, it currently holds an annual throughput capacity of 440,000 teu and by 2019 it is expected to handle more than 2,800,000 teu.
