Did you know that the maritime industry accounts for about 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions, and is expected to increase by 50% by 2050 if no action is taken?

The maritime industry faces the urgent challenge of decarbonising its operations to align with the global climate goals. To achieve this, significant investments are needed to support the adoption of decarbonisation technologies, energy efficiency measures, or alternative fuels in the sector.

A different shade of “green” financial landscape has emerged that offers innovative instruments to raise capital for maritime decarbonisation, such as green loans, sustainability-linked loans, and transition bonds. These instruments vary in their features, mechanisms, and degree of alignment with the environmental and social objectives of the sector. They also attract the interest of investors, financial institutions, and maritime stakeholders who seek to finance environmentally responsible projects. However, these instruments also pose challenges and opportunities for their implementation, such as the need for standardised frameworks, transparent reporting, and robust verification processes to ensure the credibility of sustainable initiatives.

Pang Toh Wee, Senior Consultant - Maritime Advisory, DNV will present Raising money for decarbonization with green, sustainability-linked and transition loans and bonds in Session 3 on Wednesday 8th May.
