Oman MoU targets environmental management

The MoU details a long-term strategic programme between SOHAR and MECA for the continuous enhancement of environmental management in Sohar, Oman. The programme focuses on environmental permitting, compliance of all port and freezone operations with international best practices and continuous monitoring of the impact of operations on the environment.

Chairman of the board of SOHAR, HE Dr Mohammed bin Nasser Al Zaabi, noted: “At SOHAR, we are continuously renewing our commitment towards maintaining a healthy, safe, and secure environment for our industries, our surrounding community, and nature itself.

“Effective environmental management is an essential element to sustain the development of any business, and we at SOHAR believe the same. Therefore, this new integrated and systematic environmental management approach will be critical in safeguarding the sustainable development of the Port and Freezone.”

Sustained effort

In July, SOHAR Port and Freezone, in cooperation with SOHAR tenants, signed a contract with Oman-based Nakheel Environmental and Industrial Solutions to install, operate, and maintain an Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Network (AQMN) in and around the port area as part of MECA’s plan to enhance environmental monitoring.

In September 2014, Sohar Port and Freezone launched its first environmental management programme in conjunction with the Ministry of Climate Affairs.
