11 port projects underway in Iran

Mohammad Rastad, head of Iran’s Ports & Maritime Organization (PMO), said the private investment projects began in 2019 under BOT (build-operate-transfer) contracts.

Mr Rastad confirmed that last year 12 port development projects worth about US$214m were completed in collaboration with the private sector, reported Tehran Times, following a report by the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), the official news agency of Iran.

The PMO has also allocated about US$500m of its internal resources to such development projects in the current year (beginning 20 March).

Mr Rastad noted that port machinery worth over €20m, which were supposed to be imported into the country in the previous year, were built by domestic companies and installed in Shahid Rajaee Port, Iran’s largest container port in the southern province of Hormozgan.

He further noted that this year, three phases of Shahid Rajaee port will be put into operation and 900m of wharves will also be inaugurated to increase the port’s container capacity.
