DP World inks Saudi deal

Developer Emaar EC and DP World have signed an agreement to build and manage a new port in Saudi Arabia at King Abdullah Economic City.

Once completed, the 20m teu capacity facility will not only be the largest in the Red Sea, but also one of the top 10 in the world

A multi-purpose terminal is scheduled to open in 2010, followed by a 1.6m teu container terminal the year after. Thereafter, phased expansion of the terminal will take place. It has also been revealed that Saudi port authorities are studying the possible transfer of management responsibilities of their ports to DP World. Around 80% of all port operations are already carried out by the private sector.
