KCT phase 1 underway in Sharjah

Work on phase 1 of the new development at Khorfakkan Container Terminal has commenced consisting of a 400 metre berth with alongside draught of 16 metres. The 120,000 sq metre storage area will be laid out with five linear roadways running the full length of the berth for RTG operations.

KCT to get four super post-Panamax with 61 metre outreach

First phase investment will require US$100m to develop roads, a 600 metre long quay, a reservoir, a bonded warehouse and upgraded power supply, allowing the facility to open by 2007.

The quayside will have four super-post-Panamax STS gantry cranes with outreach of 61 metres and 60 tonnes safe working load with automatic long twinlift spreaders.

The carousel operation between the quayside and the RTGs will be performed by Terberg T220 terminal tractors and the Seacom multi-trailer system. “We have found this to be both a safe and efficient combination for maximising container movement on the terminal whilst minimising the actual number of vehicles involved, ” says manager Phil Madin. The development will be completed by end 2005.
