Port of Fujairah expansion
A 35-year agreement will see UAE’s Abu Dhabi Ports develop port infrastructure and manage operations at the Port of Fujairah.
The exclusive deal stipulates that Abu Dhabi Ports will manage all container, general cargo, RoRo and cruise ships at the Port of Fujairah. It also includes the building of ‘Fujairah Terminals’, which will be wholly owned by Abu Dhabi Ports and serve to complement services provided by Abu Dhabi’s Khalifa Port and Zayed Port.
Commenting on the agreement, Captain Mohammed Jumaa Al Shamsi, CEO of Abu Dhabi Ports, said: “Signing with the Port of Fujairah marks a major milestone for Abu Dhabi Ports. This significant investment will see Abu Dhabi Ports share best practices with Fujairah Ports, which is one of the most important economic and commercial ports operating in the UAE, to further complement services offered at both Khalifa Port and Zayed Port.
“This agreement will offer clients on the east coast more options, it will also allow the re-export of goods that arrive at Khalifa Port to India, Pakistan and East Africa in addition to receiving general cargo for clients in the northern emirates.”
A 1km quay will be established as part of the agreement, alongside a yard measuring approximately 300,000 square metres and the deepening of berths to 16.5m, to increase capacity and cater for larger vessels.
Abu Dhabi Ports will also work on equipping the Port of Fujairah with new equipment such as STS post panama quay cranes and RTG’s, as well as new IT systems.
Maqta Gateway, a wholly owned subsidiary of Abu Dhabi Ports, will develop a ‘Port Community System’ that links port communities with various departments, facilities and operations.
Work is expected to begin next year.
