RSGT prepares for extension works

Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea Gateway Terminal is poised to award the contract for civil works relating to the extension of its terminal.

Berth length will be increased at the Jeddah terminal

The extension, scheduled for 2015 completion, will expand the total berth length by 255 metres to 1,324m. The main berth will be extended from 745m to 850m, while a second berth will be promoted from a feeder berth of 324m to a new berth of 474m.

Capacity will be increased from the current 1.8m teu to 2.5m teu by 2015. The development will complete the original construction plans for the four year old terminal.

Jang Kwan Young, head of business development and marketing, described the expansion as an “ambitious plan” which will allow RSGT to be able to properly berth and handle three mega vessels at the same time.

Soren Hansen, RSGT chief operating officer, added: “We’ve already placed an order for our yard equipment plus we are very close to awarding the contract for the civil works for the extension of the feeder berth.”

RSGT is one of three terminals in Saudi’s Jeddah Islamic Port. The other two in the South and North Terminal are operated by DP World and Gulftainer respectively.
