SAUDI ARABIA BIG ON BOXES
Saudi Arabia claims it will develop the largest container terminal in the Middle East at Emaar Economic City.This will be capable of throughputs in the region of 10m teu annually, as well as being able to accommodate breakbulk and dry bulk vessels.
The former, some 1,000 km from Dar es Salaam, is rail connected and handles transit cargo for Burundi, Rwanda and Congo. The 500,000 tonne-capacity terminal is to be offered as a three-year concession. It has a 301-metre quayside, 3,745 square metres of container stacking yard and a further 10,000 square metres of warehousing for general cargo.
