Terminal expansion starts

DP World Jeddah and the Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani) have inaugurated the start of construction work for the first phase of the development of the DP World Jeddah-operated Southern Container Terminal in Jeddah Islamic Port, Saudi Arabia.

Mohammed Al Sheikh, CEO of DP World and regional head of the company in Saudi Arabia, said DP World is working closely with Saudi Ports Authority “to modernise the facility”. He added that the focus is expanding capacity and diversifying the range of smart logistics services.

Berth and draft extension

The plans to develop the Southern Container Terminal include extending the berth length from 1,500m to 2,150m, and deepening the draft to 18m, which will enable the terminal to serve five ships simultaneously and deal with the largest container ships, with a tonnage of up to 26,000 TEUs.

The development work will be carried out in four phases, with the project scheduled to be fully completed by 2024.

The works will include adding fifteen new STS coastal cranes featuring the latest technologies, and 60 electric RTGs within the storage yards, in batches starting from the second quarter of 2022.

These qualitative additions will allow DP World in Jeddah to enhance its annual activity and increase capacity container handling from 2.4m TEUs to 4m by 2024.
