Throughput boost for Syrias TICT
Syrias Tartous International Container Terminal (TICT) recorded a 44% increase in container throughput during the first six months of the year over the same period in 2008 and is gearing up for a further increase in volume and vessel calls over the coming months, according to Romeo Salvador, TICT general manager and chief executive.
Despite the economic slowdown and contracting container trades, TICT, a subsidiary of International Container Terminal Services, expects to surpass its 2008 volumes by year-end, largely as a result of strong growth in Iraqi transit trade and new shipping line clients’ calls.
Maersk, for instance, has upgraded its service to weekly calls and earlier this year MSC started calling at the terminal – the only one in the country to handle transhipments – as an alternative to the Port of Lattakia, the country’s main port. MSC cited Lattakia’s increasing cargo congestion and high port and labour fees as reasons for the move.
