AAPA
The American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) has awarded the Port of Houston Authority for its development of a trash-skimming programme along the Buffalo Bayou. The Houston project, initially developed by Houstons Buffalo Bayou Partnership, was one of 152 entries submitted by 37 ports worldwide for consideration for the AAPA award. The port prepared a report on the programme to control ” floatables” .
In comments that will chime with many in the industry, Ted Sangster of Milford Haven Port Authority says that all too often the planning regime gives disproportionate weight to environmental considerations, leading to costly delays and unreasonable rejections of development plans which ports wish to bring forward.
A key conclusion was that the “Mighty Tidy” TrashCat trash skimmer is “an extraordinarily effective weapon against floating pollution”. (See PS September 2003 p.18).
