Therejuvenation of the port of Prince Rupertcontinued apace in 2007 with throughput climbing to 10.6m tonnes, up 237% since2005 on the back of strong Pacific demand for Canadian coal, petcoke andagricultural products.

Throughput at Prince Rupert Container Terminal, which opened in October and handled 16,703 in the final two months of 2007, will also increase further during 2008, according to a port authority spokesman. “Our focus now is to achieve full utilisation of the 500,000 teu facility and complete the groundwork to begin the construction of Phase 2 of the Prince Rupert Container Terminal by early 2009.”
