Deliberations Down Mexico Way

International operator Hutchison Port Holdings, already with port interests in Mexico, is one party known to be looking at new port development together with various logistics operators in order to establish “cargo pipelines” into the US.

Schemes based on the expansion of container capacity in the Mexican west coast ports of Lazaro Cardenas and Manzanillo recently received a shot in the arm with the acquisition of the country’s biggest rail carrier, Transportacion Ferroviaria Mexicana (TFM), by the Kansas City Southern Railroad. TFM presently handles 60% of all rail traffic moving across the US border.

Another name recently put in the frame as having an interest in new Mexican containerport development is California-based Marine Terminals Corp (MTC), a USWC container terminal operator. Media reports suggest that the company was considering playing a part in a new containerport to be developed at Punta Colonet but MTC has since emphasised that while it is looking at various alternatives – and working hard to introduce new capacity at existing facilities on the USWC – it has not yet put its name to any specific Mexican project.
