Ecuador to amend ports law
The government of Ecuador is to make changes to the current ports legislation to set down new regulations and limits on port services undertaken by the state, with a view to allowing more concessions in the future.
Existing legislation laid down in the 1970s, results in the navy undertaking regulation and control of many port activities and also those of maritime companies.
Currently, it is seeking input from leading players in the sector.
The government has confirmed that all existing concessions will be honoured.
Revisions undertaken in 2008 allowed mixed operating companies, although the state still must have a 51% stake.
At present, only Puerto Bolívar is not operated by a concessionaire; Esmeraldas, Guayaquil and Manta all have private operators.
