Grant for zero-emissions Nuvera-powered truck

In a release, Hyster and California Climate Investments (CCI, CARB being part of this) explained that the finance aims to help Hyster and its partners create an emissions-free container handler for an end-user at the dock.

It is intended that the Hyster truck entering development will be fuelled by the Nuvera cell combined with a lithium-ion battery.

Hyster’s zero-emissions toploader, with a fuel cell and lithium-ion battery, can potentially effectively support applications with greater power consumption and a heavy-duty cycle due to the truck being anticipated to operate for a whole day before needing hydrogen-refuelling.

The truck’s ability to operate for longer before battery recharging is required additionally supports operations with irregular break periods where it might not be practical to plan in battery-charging throughout the day.

Hyster’s goal is to offer the fuel cell and battery-powered container handler with different charging options, and the model being developed is expected to utilise completely-integrated wireless fast-charging.

With hydrogen fuel cell technology, the American company expects its Big Truck under development to offer clean energy with no emissions, plus a low ownership cost and comparable performance to its diesel equivalent.

The new fuel cell-powered truck is also expected to benefit from the patented Hyster energy-recovery systems.

Via the recovery and storage of energy from reducing loads and braking, Hyster electric container handling trucks are anticipated to support a longer drive cycle, providing a longer operating period before recharging is necessary.

Hyster representatives will talk about the latest news regarding the developments around zero-emissions electric Big Trucks at the Greenport Congress, which will be hosted by Spain’s Port of Valencia from October 16 to 19.
