A major dredging programme will start this summer; the St John’s River channel is already 40 feet minimum from the sea to well beyond the TraPac and Hanjin sites, but after that depth is 38 feet, including the terminals used by Hamburg Sud and Mediterranean Shipping Co. “We will have 40 ft depth to the furthest terminal, which is 20 miles from the ocean,” says Roy Schleicher, senior director, trade development and global marketing, Jaxport.

Beyond this, the port authority is pushing for a dredge that will bring the entire length to 50 ft. “We are very positive and optimistic that we can have that done by the time the Panama Canal is finished,” he says.
