New Peruvian transhipment hub mooted

The proposed port will be ideally situated to serve both Chile and Ecuador.

Over the next seven years, Peru’s leading port of Callao is expected to boost its current transhipment container volume by 21.5% and that growth is expected to continue for the next two decades.

If agreed, when all phases of the proposed Ancón project are complete in 2015, the Romero group believes it will be able to capture 30% of the 2.5m teu currently being handled in Callao. Transhipment traffic is expected to rise to 600,000 teu, equivalent to half the current throughput of Callao.

The four phase Ancón development will cost $800m and will eventually produce a capacity of 4.5m teu. Significantly, Phase 1, costing $300m, will have a capacity equivalent to the South Quay project that DP world is currently developing in Callao.
