Peru approves National Port plan

The Peruvian government has approved the National Port Development Plan. The next step will be the signing of an agreement between Perus investment body, Proinversion, and the National Port Authority, which will allow the plan to be put into action and also permit the introduction of private investment in the national port network.

International operator Hutchison Port Holdings, already with port interests in Mexico, is one party known to be looking at new port development together with various logistics operators in order to establish “cargo pipelines” into the US.

Among the most important steps outlined in the plan is the development of the Callao as a South American West Coast hub. The introduction of private capital will allow the port system to be modernised and its infrastructure and equipment optimised. At the same time, high logistics costs will be reduced in order to make Peruvian exports internationally competitive. As part of the plan, five Regional Port Authorities will be created. In addition, logistics activities zones will also be established adjacent to the ports.
