Santos the winner in federal handout
Brazils seven largest ports will receive US$263m of federal investment in infrastructure this year. The money is earmarked to finance improvements to road and rail links, deepen the draught in access channels, build new access roads and acquire new equipment. Those ports benefiting will be Rio Grande, Itajai, Sao Francisco do Sul, Santos, Sepetiba, Rio de Janeiro and Vitoria.
Of the total, Santos will receive US$59.32m, which is 600% higher than money allocated in 2004. Much of this is allocated to the construction of a perimeter road to serve the 16km of quay in the port, where the aim is to reduce congestion currently afflicting the port and surrounding area.
This work, costed at US$52.22m, will take 18 months to complete and allow 12 road-rail crossings to be eliminated. The new road will also enable city and port traffic to be segregated.
A new dredging programme will also deepen the access channel draught from 14 to 15m in the first year, increasing to 16m within two years and possibly 17m over a period of eight years.
