Savannah paves way for 50% increase

The port of Savannah has completed an expansion to accommodate double-digit growth. Phase one of the pavement upgrade to Container Berth 3 is also complete thus improving capacity by continuing the ports plan to switch the terminal to a stacked operation. The Phase one capacity-upgrade of Gate 3 is also complete. When Gate 3 is complete later this year, it will allow the port to increase its total gate capacity by 50% By September, Phase two of both projects will be completed, further adding to terminal and gate capacity. ” As we have experienced doubledigit growth, we have simultaneously reduced turn times and truck congestion by making these improvements, ” says Doug J. Marchand, Executive Director of the Georgia Ports Authority (GPA).

Last year’s first-half operating result rose by 20% from the previous year as it Tilbury facility improved its performance.

“As a result, both economic and environmental efficiencies are enhanced. Cargo is being delivered quicker and emissions are being reduced.”

“Container Berth 8, a major new project that will expand capacity at the port, is also moving forward, ” says Marchand. “The initial demolition of old structures and dredging of the berth area has been completed and construction of the new dock has begun.”
