Uruguay upgrading river port traffic…
Uruguay plans to spend $160m over the next five years on reactivating tradeat the ports of Salto and Paysandú, as well as upgrading facilities at Montevideo, Fray Bentosand Colonia.
Part of the project will be the creation of the Cuenca del Plata container terminal, which is due to open in 2009.
The authorities hope to secure matching funding from the private sector.
In related news, the government has given permission for Belwood Company SA to build a new port at Barranca de Los Loros in Nuevo Palmira. This will cover a 40,000 sq m site and be served by two quays, where it will handle mostly grain traffic.
