New cranes for CentrePort Wellington
CentrePort Wellington is to purchase two new Liebherr quayside container cranes at US$7.14m apiece. The acquisition of the postPanamax, twin-lift capable cranes is linked to the port companys recent receipt of a coastal dredging permit to deepen its wharves and harbour entrance to accommodate coming generations of larger containerships.
CentrePort Wellington chief executive Liz Ward indicated the cranes would be a significant driver in achieving greater productivity and service reliability. “Our business strategy is to grow revenue through an integrated logistics approach to port facilities, services and property interests, ” says Ms Ward. “However, CentrePort Wellington is foremost a port.
Our decision to improve our container handling services and infrastructure is to position ourselves as the leading container port in central New Zealand.”
CentrePort showed a 23% rise in container throughput for the 2003-2004 financial year.
