FERNRIDE launches driverless terminal operations
In a major leap forward for autonomous logistics in Europe, FERNRIDE has begun the operational transition to fully driverless terminal tractor operations at the HHLA TK Estonia terminal near Tallinn.
This marks the reportedly first industrial deployment of autonomous yard trucking technology certified for safety under stringent EU standards.
“This is a defining moment not only for FERNRIDE but for the entire autonomous logistics industry in Europe,” said Hendrik Kramer, chief executive and co-founder of FERNRIDE.
“Meeting Europe’s most stringent regulatory standards proves our technology’s real-world readiness and moves us closer to commercial-scale deployment.”
The milestone follows the successful TÜV SÜD certification of FERNRIDE’s autonomous platform – a first under the EU Machinery Directive (2006/42/EC) for a terminal application – and approval by the Estonian Transport Administration.
The certification confirms the safety, cybersecurity and reliability of FERNRIDE’s integrated system, which includes vehicles, sensors, computers and software.
Three autonomous FERNRIDE tractors are already operating at HHLA TK Estonia. The companies are implementing a structured, safety-first rollout, training terminal staff to integrate the technology into daily operations.
