Gulfport adds hybrid harbour crane

The new Liebherr LHM 550 mobile harbour crane has a lifting capacity of 124 tonnes and is the second crane of its type operated by SSA Marine at the Port of Gulfport.

Equipped with a hybrid drive system, the crane will initially operate using its onboard power system before transitioning to electric operation once new infrastructure is completed.

A $1.6 million grant from the Mississippi Department of Transportation’s Strategic Multi-Modal Investments Fund, combined with a partial funding contribution from SSA Marine, will finance the electrical connection needed to power the crane.

“Adding a second LHM 550 at Gulfport expands our bulk handling capacity and allows us to continue delivering reliable, high-quality service to our customers,” said Greg Schruff, general manager of SSA Marine’s Port of Gulfport operations.

“That progress comes from working closely with the port, and it reflects our long-term commitment to the Mississippi Gulf Coast and SSA Marine’s broader sustainability goals.”

The crane will primarily handle bulk cargo for The Chemours Company, moving ilmenite sand used in the production of titanium dioxide pigment at the company’s nearby DeLisle manufacturing facility.

Representatives from SSA Marine, the Port of Gulfport, Chemours and the International Longshoremen’s Association marked the crane’s arrival at the terminal to highlight the latest investment in equipment and expansion of the port’s cargo handling capabilities.
