New berth opens at Puerto Bolívar
A new container berth and yard has officially opened at Puerto Bolívar in Ecuador, marking a significant milestone in the port terminal’s modernisation.
The US$400 million investment to develop Container Berth No. 6 and yard is the first step in an ambitious phase of development, says operator Yilport Latam.
“The inauguration of Berth 6 represents a crucial advance in our modernisation and expansion strategy,” said Alfredo Jurado von Buchwald, regional general manager of Yilport Latam.
“The total projected investment for the concession contract will be more than US$750 million in the next 40 years,” he added.
In 2023, Puerto Bolívar handled 250,000 teu, with bananas and copper concentrate being the main products.
Work to modernise the terminal has seen the construction of Berth No. 6, which includes the extension of 450 metres of new berth, 1 million teu capacity of new container yard, and equipment. Additionally, the depth of the access channel has been increased to 14.5 metres, with plans to reach 16.5 metres in 2025.
The inauguration of the new terminal also included the laying of the first stone for a new automated gate system and 20,000 square metres of refrigerated warehouse plus control systems.
