Port of Augusta boosts lifting capability
The Fratelli Fazio Group has placed an order for a Konecranes Gottwald ESP.9 Mobile Harbor Crane, marking the first Generation 6 crane with a 200-tonne lifting capacity to be delivered to Italy.
The crane, scheduled for delivery to Sicily’s Port of Augusta in Q3 2025, is set to enhance the port’s handling capabilities, particularly for heavy general cargo, including project loads and wind power generators.
“We’re excited about our first Generation 6 Konecranes Gottwald crane,” said Gabriele Fazio, procurement manager at Fratelli Fazio Group.
“This addition to our fleet will allow us to handle even the most challenging cargo with confidence.”
The Port of Augusta, a crucial entry point into the EU’s TEN-T core network, has long relied on earlier-generation Konecranes Gottwald cranes for its operations.
The new crane is equipped with two onboard diesel generators for independent, unplugged operation and features Konecranes’ TRUCONNECT remote monitoring system, which provides real-time data for predictive maintenance.
It is also designed for future electrification, in line with the local infrastructure’s development, and complies with Italy’s latest sustainability and digitalisation standards, making it eligible for government incentives.
“This order underscores our long-standing relationship with the Augusta terminal and highlights Konecranes’ continued strength in the Mediterranean region,” said Konecranes’ regional sales manager, Gino Gherri.
The investment is part of Konecranes’ Ecolifting initiative, which focuses on enhancing environmental impact and reducing carbon footprints.
