PTP hits historic handling milestone
The Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP), a joint venture between Malaysia’s MMC Group and Netherlands-based APM Terminals, has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first container terminal in Malaysia to handle over 12.25 million teu in a single year.
This record-breaking feat surpassed the previous high of 11.2 million teu set in 2021, reinforcing PTP’s position as Malaysia’s largest and leading transshipment hub.
“2024 has been nothing short of extraordinary,” said PTP chair, Tan Sri Che Khalib Mohamad Noh.
“Our record-breaking performance underscores PTP’s indispensable role in global supply chains. This milestone is a testament to the dedication, resilience and hard work of the entire PTP team.”
The 12 millionth teu was handled on 23 December 2024, topping off an exceptional year for PTP, with a series of achievements including 14,036 quayside moves in a single 12-hour shift on 22 September 2024.
In July, PTP recorded its highest monthly volume at 1,115,181 teu, and from May 2024 onwards it consistently handled over one million teu per month.
December 2024 also saw PTP implement Kaleris’s Navis N4 4.0 terminal operating system, designed to support future growth.
PTP has earned recognition as the fifth most efficient container port globally, according to the World Bank’s Container Port Performance Index 2023, and ranks 15th in volume throughput, as noted by Lloyd’s List.
“Our goal is to sustain this momentum and achieve even greater milestones in 2025 and beyond,” said PTP chief executive, Mark Hardiman.
“We have made extensive preparations for the future, focusing not only on port asset upgrades and infrastructure enhancements, but also on advancing our environmental, social and governance agenda, strengthening safety policies and driving our digitalisation strategies.”
