BEST expands Navarra intermodal terminal

This major development marks a significant step in strengthening inland connectivity with the Port of Barcelona.

“We are very proud to start this expansion work of a project that began thirteen years ago in the same place with an inoperative terminal,” said Guillermo Belcastro, chief executive of Hutchison Ports BEST.

“As a result of our vision and support from our customers, Synergy has connected the Port of Barcelona with six weekly frequencies.”

The expansion follows Hutchison Ports BEST securing a 15-year concession from ADIF in September 2024 to operate the Noain-based terminal. The project will nearly triple the terminal’s area to 42,000 sqm and includes the construction of two 550-metre railway tracks and a larger esplanade to enhance rail operations and container storage.

A key component of the project is sustainability. Part of the investment will replace current diesel-powered reach stackers with fully electric ones, helping decarbonise ogistics operations.

“This investment will enhance connectivity for exporters and importers in northern Spain and southern France with more than 200 ports through the Port of Barcelona,” Belcastro added.

“It’s a step toward building competitive, reliable and sustainable supply chains in the face of global uncertainty.”

The upgrade is expected to complete by the end of 2025.
