Billion dollar Bremerhaven investment

APM Terminals (APMT) and Eurogate are considering a €1bn (US$1.2bn) expansion of their 50-50 joint operation in Bremerhaven, Germany, as liner companies continue to ramp-up interest in Hamburg.

The plan aims to upgrade and modernise the North Sea Terminal Bremerhaven, expanding the current three million TEU capacity to four million TEU per annum and preparing for the extensive electrification of equipment and use of renewable electrical power.

This news follows MSC increasing its use of Hamburg.

COSCO is also interested in taking an 80% stake in Hamburg-based stevedore and logistics operator, Zippel. If successful, the deal will give COSCO access to Zippel’s multipurpose cargo handling activities and barge services in Hamburg’s port ecosystem, enhancing its local service capabilities and enabling stronger flexibility in combined sea-inland transport activities.
