BlueTechPort gets the green light in Barcelona

Selected from seven bids involving 16 companies, the TJV achieved the highest overall score in the tender process.

Construction is set to begin in November 2025 with a scheduled completion timeline of two and a half years. Until the new facility opens, BlueTechPort member organisations – previously located in the Sant Bertran wharf sheds – will remain housed at the World Trade Center Barcelona (WTCB).

Spanning 25,700 sqm, the BlueTechPort project is central to the Port of Barcelona’s strategy to promote innovation within the maritime and port sectors. The development will serve as a hub for start-ups, scale-ups, accelerators, research centres and international organisations working in the blue economy.

It also supports the Port of Barcelona’s role as a ‘sandbox’ for innovation, providing companies access to testing spaces on the Barcelona Nord wharf.

Located at the intersection of the city and commercial port, the new hub will also contribute to the urban transformation of the Sant Bertran area. BlueTechPort is part of a 36-year concession granted to WTCB, which includes investment and long-term management responsibilities.

Designed by Barcelona-based b720 Fermín Vázquez Arquitectos, the facility preserves the original portico structures of the 1960s warehouses and incorporates sustainable building practices.

Features include an eight-storey tower, flexible workspaces, laboratories, an auditorium and bioclimatic design elements. The building will be partially powered by geothermal seawater systems and solar energy, with water recycling systems aiming to significantly reduce water consumption.
