DP World Antwerp terminal expansion

The announcement coincides with the 20th anniversary of DP World’s European operations.

Since opening in 2005, Antwerp Gateway has grown from handling 70,000 teu to more than 2.4 million teu this year. The terminal, known for pioneering automation in Europe, has become a benchmark for technology, intermodal connections and renewable energy to improve the flow of trade across the continent.

“This is one of the most sustainable terminals in Europe and the Port of Antwerp has consistently led the way in innovation,” said Edi Cioran, chief executive of DP World Antwerp Gateway.

“From promoting night logistics and intermodal, barge and rail, to creating additional container capacity by maximising its existing footprint through modern technology, Antwerp Gateway continues to push boundaries.

“Safety innovations such as safe straddle carrier platforms, along with on-site renewable energy generation via our unique biogas plant and wind turbine, further highlight our commitment to safe, sustainable and efficient operations.”

The expansion will fund new infrastructure, additional yard space and digital upgrades, including the introduction of DP World’s Zodiac terminal operating system in 2028.

By 2026, the final four of 27 new automated stacking crane modules will be operational, enabling denser container stacking and optimising yard space.

The terminal employs over 750 staff and is fully digitalised with a truck appointment system, biometric access and a trucker app.
