Floating pontoons: An easy upgrade to infrastructure
Sydney Harbour’s Moores Wharf, the hub of Port Authority of NSW’s marine operations, has unveiled a state-of-the-art floating pontoon, designed to improve access and efficiency for port vessels.
This upgrade reaffirms the Port Authority’s commitment to operational excellence and safety in one of Australia’s busiest harbours.
“Moores Wharf is the heart of our Sydney operations, and this new pontoon enhances our ability to respond quickly and efficiently to harbour incidents,” said Captain John Finch, chief operating officer, Port Authority of NSW.
”By floating with the tide, the pontoon ensures safer and more streamlined access to our vessels, vital for both routine operations and emergency responses.”
Mooring flexibility
The floating pontoon replaces two aging jetties with an innovative design that offers increased flexibility for mooring. With eight berths and a tide-adjusting platform, it allows seamless docking for pilot and multipurpose vessels, regardless of water levels.
Additionally, a newly installed wave baffle reduces wave action, ensuring smoother docking and protecting port vessels from wake damage.
Further enhancements include a fuel bowser for onsite refuelling and solar-powered lighting to improve marina visibility. The upgrades solidify Moores Wharf’s role as a critical 24/7 marine operations base, overseeing thousands of vessel movements annually.
Captain Finch added that the upgraded port infrastructure highlights the port authority’s dedication to safe, efficient and sustainable maritime operations on Sydney Harbour.
