GCT pushes DP4 as priority

Global Container Terminals (GCT) has submitted its Deltaport Berth 4 (DP4) expansion project to Canada’s new Major Project Office, marking a major step forward in advancing one of the country’s most significant private-sector infrastructure proposals.

GCT is also calling on the federal government to add DP4 to the Projects of National Interest List, highlighting the project’s importance in strengthening Canada’s supply chains, attracting private capital and supporting climate-smart growth.

“Prime Minister Carney has set a clear direction for Canada – invest in infrastructure that unlocks private capital, drives innovation, and positions our country for long-term success,” said Eric Waltz, president and chief executive of GCT.

“Adding DP4 to the Projects of National Interest List would demonstrate federal leadership and provide the certainty we need to advance one of the most important private-sector-led trade infrastructure investments in Canada.”

The DP4 project, located at Roberts Bank, is expected to add more than 2 million teu of container capacity, create over 10,000 jobs and contribute billions to GDP. It also includes environmental measures such as full electrification, shorepower and habitat offsets to align with Canada’s net-zero goals.

“DP4 represents exactly the type of high-impact, low-risk infrastructure project the prime minister has called for — private sector investment, partnering with public sector port authority, environmentally responsible and nationally strategic,” Waltz added.

By placing DP4 on the national interest list, GCT argues, Ottawa would streamline the regulatory process and send a clear signal to global investors that Canada is serious about trade infrastructure and investment competitiveness.

“Now is the time for federal leadership,” said Waltz. “Adding DP4 to the list is the right step
