Gdansk wharf upgrade completed

Located on the eastern bank of Kanal Kaszubski, the upgraded 204-metre-long quay has been developed as a multipurpose berth capable of accommodating larger vessels and supporting heavier cargo operations. The project forms part of the port’s wider strategy to enhance infrastructure supporting Poland’s transport, trade and energy sectors.

Construction work on the expanded wharf was carried out by PORR, while ShibataFenderTeam supplied the berth protection and mooring systems.

The equipment package included 20 Cone Fender Systems fitted with closed box steel panels, 10 Extruded Fenders and 10 T-Head Bollards with a 100-tonne capacity. According to the companies involved, all equipment was delivered ahead of schedule, supporting the timely completion of the project.

The fender engineering process involved several technical challenges linked to the operational demands of the multipurpose berth. The design needed to account for a range of loading scenarios, including line loads, double-contact berthing and low-impact vessel approaches.

ShibataFenderTeam’s in-house engineering division developed a customised solution tailored to the quay’s operational profile and designed to comply with the latest ISO standards governing marine fender systems.

The approval process also included project-specific performance requirements and local verification testing using supplied rubber test plates.

The modernised berth is expected to improve vessel turnaround efficiency and increase the port’s capability to handle a broader range of cargoes and ship sizes.
