Imperial Beach Pier upgrade continues

Phase 2 of the project to safeguard the future of the iconic pier is now underway with the replacement of two pilings to maintain its structural integrity along with localised deck board replacement and utility piping work.

Led by constructors, L.A. Design Group-WLA, phase 1 began in 2021 with enhancements to repaint the pier’s three structures – the Tin Fish Restaurant, Lifeguard Tower and public restrooms.

Murals reflecting Imperial Beach’s reputation as an iconic destination at the most southwesterly point of the continental US were included as were external repairs.

This second phase which has seen the port budget around US$2 million to complete will include new stainless steel cable railing, a shade canopy and activity placards and distance markers along with the work to maintain the pier’s structural integrity.

To facilitate the maintenance the port has announced a number of closures over the last two weeks of November to allow the construction crews to move large equipment and material on to the pier ahead of placing the two new pilings.

Staging and prep work, placement of new piling and pile driving has already taken place with the final works being carried out head of the anticipated full reopening on 28 November.

The port warns that future deck board replacement work and utility piping work may require further closures, about which more details will be released at a later date. The project is anticipated to be completed in summer 2025.
