Jones Bros boosts Stena freight

The firm was contracted to deliver two new parking areas for commercial trailers, part of a multi-million-pound investment to enhance freight capacity on Stena Line’s increasingly busy routes between Birkenhead, Dublin and Belfast.

“It has been fantastic to strengthen our relationship with Stena Line over the past year,” said Mike Davies, senior contract manager at Jones Bros. “The additional trailer parking spaces will help alleviate some of the strain at this incredibly busy terminal.”

The 12-month project began in May 2024 under the design of consultant engineering firm, Haskoning. It created 200 additional trailer spaces, alongside significant infrastructure upgrades including new security fencing and four 30-metre-high lighting columns. Surfacing works were carried out by Cambrian, a sister company of Jones Bros, with more than 27,000m² of base layer laid.

The scheme also included the construction of 18,000m² of access roads surfaced with Hardipave, a durable asphalt-concrete hybrid, and 80mm block paving for the trailer bays to withstand heavy-duty vehicle use.

Stena Line’s regional port development manager, Christian Grossie, said: “The terminal is a key hub for us, with 48 weekly sailings. This expansion greatly improves traffic flow and eases congestion.”
