Port funding boosts Hueneme upgrades

The funding was awarded through the US Maritime Administration’s Port Infrastructure Development Program and will support improvements at one of the US’s leading gateways for fresh produce and automobile imports.

Port officials said the project would enhance operational efficiency, improve safety and help accommodate larger vessels visiting the California port.

“Strategic investments like this ensure the Port of Hueneme remains a reliable, forward-looking gateway for global trade,” said Jason Hodge, president of the Oxnard Harbor District Board of Harbor Commissioners.

“This funding will allow us to continue delivering economic value for our region while supporting a more resilient national supply chain.”

The project forms part of the port’s wider capital development strategy and builds on a previous US$80 million award from California’s Port and Freight Infrastructure Program.

Planned works include wharf improvements, berth upgrades and dredging operations designed to improve navigation access for larger vessels. Approximately 25,300 cubic yards (19,340 cubic metres) of sand removed during dredging will also be used to replenish a nearby beach in the City of Port Hueneme.

Port leaders said the investment would also support local workforce development and strengthen the region’s economic competitiveness.

“We are grateful for the Administration’s investment in our port which positions us to grow import/export opportunities and create good-paying jobs for our community,” said Kristin Decas, chief executive and port director.

The Port of Hueneme plays a major role in California trade flows, handling automobiles, fresh produce and other high-value cargoes serving markets across the US.
